How to Set Up Hetzner Object Storage in 5 Minutes

A quick step-by-step guide to creating your first Hetzner Object Storage bucket and getting your credentials.

Setting up Hetzner Object Storage is surprisingly simple. In this guide, we'll walk you through the entire process – it takes about 5 minutes.

Prerequisites

You'll need a Hetzner Cloud account. If you don't have one, sign up here. New accounts get €20 in free credits.

Step 1: Access Object Storage

Log into your Hetzner Cloud Console and click on Object Storage in the left sidebar.

Step 2: Create a Bucket

Click Create Bucket and choose:

  • Name: Something descriptive like mysite-media
  • Region: Pick the closest to your audience (fsn1 for Europe is a good default)

That's your storage container ready.

Step 3: Generate Credentials

Still in Object Storage, click on Manage credentials and generate new S3 credentials. You'll get:

  • Access Key
  • Secret Key

Save these securely – you'll need them to connect your WordPress site.

Step 4: Connect to WordPress

Install the CloudStrap Media Offload plugin, go to Media → Hetzner Offload, and enter your credentials.

Click Test Connection to verify everything works.

You're Done!

New media uploads will now automatically go to Hetzner Object Storage. Your site is faster, your server is lighter, and your hosting costs just dropped.
